An Equine Assisted Interaction (EAI) is an experiential learning approach or specific form of therapy that promotes personal growth and development through interactions with horses. It is a powerful tool for enhancing self-awareness, communication skills, leadership, and teamwork. EAIs can be used for a variety of purposes, including:

  • Improving self-esteem and confidence

  • Developing leadership skills

  • Enhancing communication and teamwork skills

  • Processing trauma and grief

  • Addressing mental health issues, in combination with support from your own mental health professional, such as anxiety and depression

  • Building a stronger connection with oneself and others

  • Understanding at a deeper level relational ruptures and how to repair authentically

What is an Equine Assisted Interaction (EAI)?

Sometimes it can be hard to imagine what equine assisted interventions may look, sound and feel like. One documentary on Netflix Captures the essence of how facilitated time with horses can be therapeutic.

Silent Comrade’ follows three soldiers with PTSD as they seek treatment with therapist Claudia Swierczek on a horse farm in Brandenburg.

🌿 Our Approach

Connect. Reflect. Inspire.

At The Therapeutic Tutors, we work with children, young people, adults, and whole systems—including families, carers, and professionals. Our approach is relational, systemic, and embodied, using equine facilitated learning as a powerful way to support emotional development, healing, and meaningful change.

Our core values—Connect, Reflect, Inspire—anchor every session and interaction.

Why The Secret Garden?

We’re often asked why we draw inspiration from Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden. The answer is simple: it captures the essence of what we witness every day.

The story follows children isolated by grief and trauma who begin to heal through connection—with nature, with animals, and with each other. As they tend a forgotten garden, they begin to feel again—hope, strength, joy. The garden becomes a mirror for their emotional lives, and a space where transformation can take root.

In our work, horses play a similar role. They offer a living, non-verbal presence that invites safety, connection, and emotional truth. Like the garden, they don’t demand change—they create the conditions in which change can grow.

🌱 Connect

Healing begins in relationship.

In The Secret Garden, the neglected space becomes a place of reconnection—where Mary, Colin, and Dickon come into relationship with each other, themselves, and the world around them.
Connection leads to healing.

In our sessions, horses offer attuned, non-verbal connection—grounded, responsive, and without judgment. This helps individuals and systems experience new ways of relating: feeling safe, being seen, and beginning to trust.

As therapeutic tutors—both horse and human—we support children, adults, families, and professionals to build relational safety. Connection is not just the first step; it's the foundation of everything that follows.

🌿 Reflect

Awareness opens the door to change.

As the children in The Secret Garden nurture the earth, they begin to make sense of their feelings, behaviours, and histories. The garden reflects their inner lives and helps them grow.

In our practice, horses act as sensitive mirrors. Their subtle responses invite clients to slow down, tune in, and notice what’s happening—inside and between them. We use these moments to support reflection on emotional patterns, relational dynamics, and inherited narratives.

Reflection with us is never about blame. It’s about growing insight, together.

🌼 Inspire

Where hope begins to move.

In the story, Colin finds strength, Mary finds joy, and even the adults around them begin to change. What starts as quiet care becomes contagious. The garden doesn’t just heal individuals—it transforms the whole household.

In our sessions, horses inspire confidence, curiosity, and emotional courage. Children and adults begin to feel more connected and capable. Families and professionals reconnect with their purpose.
People begin to hope again.

Inspiration in our work isn’t abstract—it’s alive. It moves systems forward, brings new energy into relationships, and creates space for lasting growth.
